AI is (not) polyester
There’s something valuable in this piece but I think it bases its central argument on an extremely narrow conception of AI.
AI as one “thing”, one “material”, like polyester, is a terrible mistake. There is no going back to clearly defined “human-art” that is contrarian to Generative AI-Art. There are gradients and deep entanglements, and AI is, or will be, hitches to everything else. There will be AI aesthetes, who may choose to disclose or not how they used AI.
The more interesting point is how one could influence the appreciation (value) of AI. High-tech can be seen as low-class. and therefore culturally devalued.
But AI is not “one thing”. It is not just means of production. It’s a platform, a launchpad for novelty and strangeness. Brave new strangeness.
