Growing up in the topics, football really was life. When I wasn’t kicking the ball with my friends, I was kicking the ball by myself. Doing drills, improving my skills, shooting the ball to bounce off the brick wall, over and over again, looking to hit that chalk-drawn top corner.

Or we were playing FIFA, the video game. my favorite thing about FIFA was that it inspired me to get back out there and practice a new move or a new skill. FIFA was an inspiration machine that filled the gaps left by football practice, homework, school and watching live games on TV.

I never played FIFA to get better at playing FIFA. I played so I could become a better football player, and get back out there. FIFA was such a reliable companion because it didn’t suck me in. It spat me out, back to life.

There’s nothing wrong with e-sports athletes, content creators, weird internet careers or any line of work that’s heavy on screen time.

I’m just wondering if we forgot what was clear as day to us as kids: we played FIFA on our video game consoles so we could improve our skills on the pitch.
